BATTERY COUNCIL INTERNATIONAL
Salary range: $70,000–$90,000, plus bonus and benefits
About BCI
Battery Council International is the century-old trade association for the North American battery industry. We lead the industry’s federal and state advocacy on recycling, extended producer responsibility, transport, and safety, alongside our technical, data, and sustainability programs. We are a small, remote team, and we are building our state and federal advocacy capability in-house.
The role
This is the engine room of our advocacy program. You will track what is happening in legislatures across the country, flag what matters, and help BCI act on it. You will also assist with federal matters when state sessions quiet down in the second half of the year. It is a great role for someone early in a government-affairs career who wants real ownership and a national view of policy.

What you’ll do
- Track fifty-state activity — monitor legislation and regulation affecting the battery industry across all states via BCI’s tracking database, and keep a current, reliable picture of what is moving.
- Watch the federal side — review the Federal Register daily for regulatory actions affecting the industry, follow federal legislation, and keep an eye on industry listservs.
- Summarize and report — turn developments into concise summaries and tracking reports, and maintain an ongoing issues-management report for the team and members.
- Write it up — draft articles and updates on policy issues for BCI’s digital publications and website.
- Support state outreach — help advance BCI’s policy priorities and coordinate with members and allied organizations.
- Back up federal advocacy — lend a hand on federal work as needed.
What you bring
- A bachelor’s degree in political science, energy, public policy, related field, or equivalent experience.
- Roughly two to five years of experience in government affairs, legislative tracking, policy research, or a closely related field — strong internship experience considered for early-career candidates.
- Familiarity with how state (and ideally federal) legislative and regulatory processes work.
- Sharp research and writing, strong organization, and real attention to detail across a high volume of material.
- The self-direction to manage a broad workload well on a home-based, distributed team.
Nice to have
- Exposure to environmental, recycling, product-stewardship, or manufacturing policy.
- Experience with a legislative-tracking platform (Bloomberg Government, Politico, or similar) and with coalition work.
What we offer
- Competitive pay in the range above, plus an annual bonus.
- A 5% 401(k) match and medical, dental, and vision coverage.
- Paid time off and a work-from-home schedule based in the DC area, with occasional travel and in-person meetings.
- A national view of policy and genuine ownership of BCI’s state program, early in your career.
- Exposure to international policy and global battery-association work.
